Dryer duct cleaning for long and second-floor runs

The duct inside your walls, floors and ceilings, cleaned end to end. Standard runs $149; long, second-floor and interior runs from $229.

What dryer duct cleaning covers

Your dryer vent is three parts: the flexible connector behind the dryer, the duct that runs through the house, and the hood outside. Most lint ends up in the middle part, the part you cannot see, especially at elbows and joints.

We clean the whole duct with a rotary brush on flexible rods, working from inside and from the hood outside, while a HEPA vacuum pulls the lint out. Then we measure airflow at the hood again so you can see the result in feet per minute.

When a run counts as long

  • Second-floor laundry venting down through a wall or out a gable
  • Interior laundry rooms 15 feet or more from the nearest outside wall
  • Basement runs crossing the house to reach daylight, common in older Portsmouth, Kittery and Exeter homes
  • Runs with three or more elbows, each of which traps lint

The residential building code used in New Hampshire limits a dryer exhaust duct to 35 feet, reduced for each bend, unless the dryer maker allows more. Longer and bendier runs clog faster, which is why they need regular cleaning.

Signs the duct needs cleaning

  • The outside flap barely opens when the dryer runs
  • It has been more than a year, or you do not know when it was last done

Questions

What is the difference between dryer vent cleaning and dryer duct cleaning?
They usually mean the same job: cleaning the duct that carries hot air and lint from the dryer to the outside. Air duct cleaning is different; that is the heating and cooling ductwork.
How much does dryer duct cleaning cost?
A standard run is $149. Long, second-floor and interior runs start at $229, and roof vents are quoted from a photo.
How long is too long for a dryer duct?
The residential code limit is 35 feet, reduced for each elbow, unless the dryer manufacturer allows more. Long runs need cleaning more often.
